Vegetation

Little natural vegetation. Relicts of acid oakwoods and oak/beechwoods with birch remain in the north and east. In central Belgium original beechwoods now largely replaced by farmland but with occasional patches of coppiced oak and hornbeam. Dry grassland drastically reduced; pockets remain in the south and east on sandy and calcareous soils. Some extensive areas of raised bogs and moor survive in the east. Saltmarshes and dunes, once extensive along the North Sea coast, are highly reduced due to urbanization. (Paragraph reproduced with permission from Davis, S.D. et al. (1986). Plant Conservation Programmes

PLANTCOL is a project focussing on Belgian ex-situ collections of living plants. It is coordinated by the Vereniging van Botanische Tuinen en Arboreta vzw and cooperates with several Belgian botanic gardens and arboreta. Overall goal of the project is to complete an inventory of the living collections, stimulate expert exchange and publish information in a web based database.

A seed bank of wild plants specific for the phytogeographical districts of Belgium is at the National Botanic Garden of Belgium. Seed samples of rare and endangered species from the different phytogeographical regions of Belgium are stored at -20° C. This ex situ conservation is a contribution to implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. This institute also runs a monitoring programme on Apium repens.
