ESPC Target 2

A preliminary assessment of the conservation status of all known species
at national, regional and international level

TARGET 2. CONSERVATION STATUS AND RED LISTING.

Information: Assessing the conservation status of plants and fungi species is one of the first steps towards setting priorities for funding and action. IUCN Red list criteria have provided an internationally recognised tool for assessing conservation status, and a new on-line tool IUCN RapidList, has been developed to make preliminary assessments with minimal data. Much progress has been made on national Red Lists and Red Books in Europe (see national information below) and regional lists for bryophytes and macro-fungi, but there is an urgent need for a regional European Red List for vascular plants and for work on the other taxonomic groups, such as lichens and algae.

Targets: (for details of lead partners download pdf of ESPC)

GSPC target 2

A preliminary assessment of the conservation status of all known plant species at national, regional and international levels

ESPC 2.1

European Red Lists produced by 2014 (review of progress in 2011), vascular plants completed by 2010, Red Lists updated periodically for vascular plants and bryophytes, and at least a preliminary assessment produced for fungi, lichens and algae

Actions to mitigate the effects of climate change: where possible species which are under a high degree of threat from the effects of climate change should be indicated in national and regional Red Lists.
