ESPC Target 6

At least 30% of production lands managed consistent
with the conservation of plant diversity

TARGET 6. CONSERVING PLANTS IN PRODUCTION LANDS

Information: Developing and testing methods for improving all aspects plant conservation should be a priority for research organisations, NGOs, state agencies, and individuals. All successful methods should be disseminated as widely as possible to be replicated in other countries and regions.

Targets: (for details of lead partners download pdf of ESPC)

GSPC target 6

At least 30% of production lands managed consistent with the conservation of plant diversity

ESPC 6.1

80% of Europe’s remaining high biodiversity production lands (e.g. old growth forest, natural/semi-natural grasslands, arable plant-rich areas, High Nature Value Farmland) managed consistent with conservation of plant diversity through traditional management and other mechanisms.

ESPC 6.2

20%* of production lands managed to maintain and restore plant diversity, reduce fragmentation, and mitigate effects of climate change within the wider landscape. (*20% of those production lands not already included in the calculation for target 6.1)

ESPC 6.3
100% of East European countries have mechanisms (lobbying information, case studies, biodiversity/economic benefit studies) to promote the urgent need for and the benefits of plant conservation in production lands.

ESPC 6.4

Ensure biodiversity risk assessments are a mandatory element of national and EU biofuel/biomass and development plans.

(to ensure that conversion of land to new uses such as urban development, infrastructure and biofuel production should only occur on low biodiversity land and should not impact on connectivity functions)

Actions to mitigate the effects of climate change: Ensure that national and regional biofuel plans do not impact negatively on biodiversity conservation or food production inside or outside of Europe. Target agricultural environmental subsidies towards creating ecological corridors to allow migration and prevent isolation of species and populations.
