ESPC Target 7

60% of the world’s threatened species
conserved in situ

TARGET 7. CONSERVING THREATENED PLANTS IN-SITU

Information: Developing and testing methods for improving all aspects plant conservation should be a priority for research organisations, NGOs, state agencies, and individuals. All successful methods should be disseminated as widely as possible to be replicated in other countries and regions.

Targets: (for details of lead partners download pdf of ESPC)

GSPC target 7

60% of the world’s threatened species conserved in situ.

ESPC 7.1

60% of species of European conservation priority* plant and fungal species, including crop wild relatives, conserved in situ by 2014 through implementation of national strategies for conserving priority species.

ESPC 7.1a

Prepare information on plants (including vascular plants, bryophytes, algae, fungi) in readiness to contribute to any scientific update of the 2010 Biodiversity target in relation to:

  • Annex (II, IV and V) of the EC Species and Habitats Directives
  • Appendix I of the Bern Convention
  • Priority species lists associated with relevant national biodiversity legislation
ESPC 7.1b
Promote the development of 20 trans-boundary or multi-country species recovery projects (including cryptogamic species & fungi) to develop Pan-European cooperation and to develop methods for coping with climate change and connectivity issues.
ESPC 7.2
Develop database of Plant Micro-reserves and genetic reserves for crop wild relatives and, where relevant, other small in situ protected areas.

Actions to mitigate the effects of climate change:national and regional strategies to identify species particularly at threat from the effects of climate change and to develop methods for conserving them in situ.
